Women here participate in Nadi forum

19 April 2015

Two Solomon Islands women participated in a round-table community Radio discussion in Nadi, Fiji, last week.

The discussions centred on various sustainable development goals.

Stella from Voice Blo Mere and Sr. Sesilia Sala, Director of Catholic Communication, were the voice for the women of the Solomon Islands through the work they do in their respective organisations.

Stella spoke mainly about the programmes that her organisation is implementing for the rural women of Solomon Islands.

Sr. Sesilia shared in her group discussion on the SDG 3, 4, 5 which focused on:

3.      Ensure healthy lives and promote well-being for all at all ages.

4.      Ensure inclusive and equitable quality education and promote lifelong learning opportunities for all.

5.      Achieve gender equality and empower all women and girls.

Sister Sesilia also talked about how these SDGs are being developed and implemented in both government and churches levels.

“Where is the fund coming from to help implement these programs to our women especially in the rural areas?” she asked.

“The churches are doing a lot to be the advocacy for these various programmes,” she added.

“For example, the Salesian Sisters in the last two years opened a Development Centre for women in Henderson in order for them to learn skills in cooking, sewing, home management, human development, computing, literacy and numeracy,” Sesilia said.

The workshop closed on Friday with the voting of the new executive for the World Association for Christian Churches in the Pacific (WACC Pacific.)

The new president is Linda from Tahiti, Vice is Rev. James of the Methodist Church, and Secretary and Treasurer is Agatha Ferei Furivai.

The outgoing president Rev Akuila thanked the members for their collaboration and wished them well for the next four years.
