Govt commits to women’s advancement

02 November 2015

THE Solomon Islands Government attaches strong commitment to the advancement of women and youth in the country says the Permanent secretary of Women and Youth, Ethel Sigimanu.

Mrs Sigimanu made the remarks when she officially opened the Solomons Fashion Week yesterday at the National Art Gallery.

She said, the fashion week has a strong alignment to the gender equality and women’s development policy, the national youth policy and the new national strategy for economic empowerment of women and girls which specifically focuses on improving the economic status of women and girls.

She also highlighted that her ministry is very encouraged by this wonderful innovation and wishes to commend the Association of Solomon islands in Creative Fashion for recognizing the talents and potential of local women, girls, men and boys who would not otherwise have such an opportunity to unleash their potential by showcasing their love for design and fashion.

“You would appreciate that women in this country contribute so much to sustaining our development needs in many areas,” she said.

Mrs Sigimanu said, there is no doubt that Solomons Fashion Week would raise the profile of women and girls in Solomon Islands.

She believes that as members continue to work together as an association, it would help to reduce the many barriers and challenges that face women in this country.

“I believe this fashion week would be the opportunity that many women and girls look forward to, to gain more exposure to the world out there and improve their business profiles,” Mrs Sigimanu said.

The fashion exhibition continues until Saturday at the National Art Gallery exhibition room.
