President Tsai thanks SI leader for support

27 July 2016

TAIPEI, (CENTRAL NEWS AGENCY) - Taiwan President Tsai Ing-wen on Monday expressed appreciation to Solomon Islands Prime Minister Manasseh Sogavare for his country's solid and long-term support of Taiwan in the international community.

Sogavare, who is on his fifth visit to Taiwan, was received at the Presidential Office by Tsai.

He said his country will continue to speak up for Taiwan at the United Nations and elsewhere in the international community.

Taiwan can play a bigger role on the international stage, Sogavare said.

The prime minister, who is on an official visit July 24-31 at the invitation of the government, is the first foreign head of government to visit Taiwan since Tsai's inauguration on May 20, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs said in a press statement.

In addition to his meeting with Tsai, he will also call on Foreign Minister David Lee and visit major facilities in Taiwan, the ministry said.

Taiwan and the Solomon Islands have had diplomatic relations for 33 years and maintain close cooperation in areas such as medical care, educational training, clean energy and agricultural technology, the foreign ministry said.
