Locals learn better driving

01 July 2014

Three officials of the Solomon Islands Electricity Authority [SIEA] have completed a week-long driving instructors’ permit course organised by the Land Transport Authority (LTA) last week.

They have joined 40 other local participants to expand their driving skills and also build capacity to run their own accredited driving schools one day.

Their participation was made possible through an initiative organised by the authority last year.

Two of the authority’s officials went to the Solomon Islands to do a defensive driving course for the SIEA drivers.

One of the three drivers, Robin Simpson, said the SIEA was the only company in the Solomons to formalise and put in place a stringent fleet management system. It has a vehicle driving policy as part of improving and lifting its standard of work.

Mr Simpson said the improvement came through after the introduction of the authority’s defensive driving system as part of the company policy.

“This Driving Instructors’ Permit course we are attending will further enhance our capacity as an organisation and as individuals. We are so thankful to LTA for giving us another opportunity to come and be part of their own DIP workshop,” Mr Simpson said.

The authority ran the DIP workshop for local drivers who wished to enhance their driving skills and also become accredited driving instructors.
