National 7s settle down in Suva

SOLOMON Islands national rugby sevens team are settling down in Suva ahead of the Soltuna 7s tournament this weekend.

The team arrived in Fiji’s capital on Tuesday as they hit the ground running with some light training sessions.

They will be participating in the inaugural Soltuna 7s a historic tournament to be held outside the country for the first time.

Solomon Islands Rugby Union Federation (SIRUF) initiated the tournament in partnership with Soltuna Company limited.

National rugby 7s coach, Aliverete Mocelutu who is also hired by SIRUF as development officer sees the importance of taking part in the tournament which will see top rugby clubs consisting of Solomon Islands descendants living in Fiji challenging our local lads.

“Like I had said in our previous interviews, this tournament is very important for the development the national team because it will give the local players a challenge different from what they get used back in the Solomon.

“We have three youth players in the squad so it will definitely help them gain confidence playing against some top clubs in Fiji,” he said.

The team have three days of training before the tournament kicks off this Saturday at the University of South Pacific (USP) Laucala campus in Suva, Fiji.

Fourteen (14) clubs of Solomon Islands descendants in Fiji will convene in Suva for the one day tournament.

The national 7s team are staying at a budget accommodation behind the Peninsula Hotel in Suva.
