DEAR EDITOR – I would appreciate your publishing my response to Charles Sisimia’s letter. “It’s our fault”, printed on the 2nd February.

I truly was shocked and appalled at the letter that clearly attempted to shift the blame for the inexcusable, disgusting attack by those cowardly animals against an elderly grandmother, Betty Volrath a week ago on the streets of our capital city.

Firstly let me state how proud I felt with the overwhelming condemnation expressed by so many decent Solomon Islanders who reacted with disgust and genuine outrage at the behaviour of those predators who prey on the  helpless and defenceless within our community.

What sort of message is Charles Sisimia trying to send, cloaking, so called, reasons, for this inexcusable behaviour that brought shame on this lovely country, in religious and fraudulent popular psychology that serves to give apologists a warm inner glow and, there by default, abrogate the actions of people who rightly deserve our collective and unrelenting condemnation for their disgraceful criminal actions.

His owns words clearly state his true opinions, and I quote selectively from his article the following.. “an evil act plotted intelligently by its engineers”… I believe should have read ‘an evil act plotted diabolicly by its engineers’

He goes on to state “in my view the public fury and condemnation of her attackers may not address this issue”….

Perhaps Charles believes that we should all remain silent when such outrages offend civilized society.

Perhaps Charles has never heard the old saying that has stood the test of time.. “For evil to exist all it takes is for good men to do nothing”……. Is that what you want Charles?

He continues..”using media helicopters to bomb shell the offenders is very insensitive and dangerous strategically”……

I beg to differ with Charles and tend to consider that not only was the attack on Betty Vollrath ‘insensitive’ in the extreme, but also the media has the duty to reflect public opinion that objects to behaviour that, ‘strategically’, has the very real potential to cause the very fabric of society to disintegrate….has the memory of the ethnic tension faded from your mind Charles?

He persists with excusing this behaviour…”telling all sorts of bad and sarcastic words to the men that did the act will make matters more unsecure to our surrounding than containing it… these are our own blood relatives who are smart, intelligently knowledgeable, by way of analyzing their offensive attack”….

Charles,  your words will certainly be taken as praise by those animals who, contrary to your opinion, are not, by any civilized definition “Intelligently knowledgeable” but rather simply ‘cowardly and cunning’….

You just might reflect on the difference and contrast in our views Charles!

Before Charles moves on to the ‘fraudulent pop psychology’ section of his letter, he leaves us with an implied threat that, perhaps, is meant to keep us silent..”

They will have access to newspapers covering their news every day after the incident, and by reading massive destructive words, condemning statements published in print and radio, will infuse them to cause more harm to our society ahead”….

Sadly, Charles you really do have the capacity to take us back to the future… such attitudes underpinned the horrors of our recent past.

In closing his apology and excuses for those thugs he concludes…”The offenders should not be blamed or be condemned. It is this nation who should take the blame”… Wrong, wrong and wrong again Charles.

The truth of the matter is that the Solomon Islands is a nation of people who not only profess the Christian way of life but demonstrate those core values through their daily lives, which, by and large, are characterized by sheer hard work and sacrifice, kindness of spirit and a generosity that is virtually unmatched around the world.

I take strong objection to you laying the blame for the actions of some disgusting thugs on this nation of wonderful people who have so clearly expressed their love and support for Betty Volrath and her family.

I find your perverse use of Christianity as a cloak for this behaviour rather sad as I wonder…. as I write this letter, just what your view would have been if it was your own grandmother in that situation!

Finally Charles, the lessons of real life, remain real, however so much you might wish life to be different.

Decent human beings earn their living through their own sweat and  toil they do not steal from others who strive to make a better life for their families and their society.

They do not conspire to rob, cheat or defraud honest people.

They do not use their strength to cause fear and intimidation, but rather to protect and care for those who are most vulnerable in our society.

They respect women and children and revere the elderly who have earned their place in society through years of selfless sacrifice for their families.

Look in the mirror Charles, you are what you have made of yourself, respect is earned not freely given and hiding the truth under the guise of ‘somebody… anybodies.. fault but my own’,  will never be accepted as an excuse by this society.

Get well soon Betty, our thoughts and prayers are with you, thank you for your years of helping make our lives better through your work in helping our children in our schools.

God bless you and your family.
