Teachers of Tuvaruhu Community High School have been offering their own time fixing desks and the school toilet since last week.
Acting School Principal Ben Bana said the school did not open its academic year as scheduled due to shortage of desks for students and a problem with the toilet.
“Since last week I collect a few teachers and we started mending desks and fixing the toilet because we care about the education of our students,” Mr Bana said.
He said the teachers constructed 71 new desks and will continue to make more when they have time.
He said parents or the community of Tuvaruhu can give them a hand if they want to because the school will commence the academic year today.
Mr Bana however said that the week late is not a big deal because many schools will formally start classes this week as well.
“The school met expenses of all the materials used to mend the desks, for the toilet and also labor costs,” he said.
Mr Bana said he hoped to work closely with the new board of school once it is established and hopes to work in cooperation with parents and guidance of students attending the school.
He said this should be a learning thing for them so that next time they must make sure that students are in a class room that has all the academic requirements.
Tuvaruhu School is one of the oldest schools in Solomon Islands and currently has a total of 904 students in both Primary and Secondary.
