The Guadalcanal Provincial Member for East Tasimboko, Paul Siovi, has described as very upsetting and embarrassing the decision by the Premier, Anthony Veke, to stay away from two burial services of the first Governor General, late Sir Baddeley Devesi.

Mr Siovi says Premier Veke failed to organize Executive Members and Provincial staff to attend the burial service of the late GG at the Saint Barnabas Cathedral in Honiara on February 19.

He said Mr Veke also failed to attend the burial service of late Sir Baddely, who was also Paramount Chief of East Tasimoboko, at his Thadiboko village, North East Guadalcanal on February 22.

Mr Siovi said it was very embarrassing that Premier Veke decided to stay away from the burial services while dignitaries including the current GG Sir Frank Kabui, Chief Justice Sir Albert Palmer, Prime Minister Gordon Darcy Lilo, former GG Sir Nathaniel Waena, Archbishop of the Church of Melanesia, David Vunagi, Government officials and business executives attended.

He said Mr Veke as the Provincial leader should have taken the lead in paying the last respect for a national leader and a traditional leader from Guadalcanal Province.

Mr Siovi said while he appreciates Mr Veke’s apology for being absent from the burial services, and his contributions towards the services, “I call on him to change his non-caring attitude”.
