Commonwealth St to get facelift

The renown Commonwealth Street in the Point Cruz will undergo redevelopment work in the coming weeks.


This follows a brief ground breaking ceremony over the weekend.

A statement from the organisers said on Saturday morning the 21 July a ground breaking ceremony took place on Commonwealth Street.  

"This is the prelude to the exciting redevelopment of the Street – to compliment and enhance the Solomon Scouts and Coastwatchers Monument dedicated on 7th

August 2011.

"This redevelopment has been funded by the Solomon Island Government through the Ministry of Tourism and Culture in its 2012 budget."

Designing Architects of the project is Nambawan Architects represented by Managing Director,  Mr. Ken Grossmith and his associate Adam Williams.   

Breaking the ground was permanent secretary to the Ministry to the Ministry of Culture and Tourism, John Wasi.  

The winning contractor MK Constructions were represented by Humphrey Tura  and Mark Kiriau.    

The development of the gardens will be undertaken by Solomon Enviro Beautification team, Mrs Keithie Saunders was present at the occasion as Chairman of the NGO.

The renovation is expected to be completed in time for the Royal visit of Prince William and his wife Kate in mid September.    

The photos also show an artist impression of the street upgrading.   It is expected to greatly enhance the area and further add to the prestige of the Solomon Scouts and Coastwatchers monument.

The monument will be a focus of the forthcoming 70th anniversary of the Landing of the US Marines on Guadalcanal ( 7th August 1942).   

Many officials  from the US Government and the Marine Corps, together with the US Ambassador will witness the unveiling by the Prime Minister , The Hon Gordon Darcy Lilo of the Honor boards. The names of Solomon Scouts and Coast watchers have been inscribed on these honor boards.   

These honor boards will complete the monument that was dedicated in August 2011.   

The artist and Sculptor of the magnificent figures of the Monument-  Mr. Frank Haikiu - will be refurbished prior to the unveiling of the Honor Boards.

This event will take place at 0900 hours on Tuesday the 7 th August .

 All members of the public are invited to witness the occasion which follow immediately  after the service at the US Memorial.
