Gillard invites Lilo

PM to make a state visit to Australia


Prime Minister Gordon Darcy Lilo will leave on Sunday on an official visit to Australia following an invitation by the Prime Minister of Australia, Julia Gillard.

It is the first ever official visit to Australia by the Head of Government of Solomon Islands in five years.

In accepting the invitation, Mr. Lilo said that it is a real honour to be invited by the Australian Government, adding that it shows the confidence that they (Australia) have in the current Government and its leadership in managing the affairs of the people of Solomon Islands.

“We will continue to maintain our strong and vibrant relationship with Australia and where possible we can add value to improve our partnership,” he said.

“I look forward to the bilateral talks with Prime Minister Gillard, the Leader of the Opposition, Hon. Tony Abbott and other key ministers that are heavily engaged in the activities with our county and the Regional Assistance Mission to Solomon Islands,” Mr Lilo said in a statement today.

Mr. Lilo in the meantime thank the people of Solomon Islands for showing the trust and confidence in his leadership and the government which earned the respect of Australian Government by inviting him as their special guest.

Also in Australia, Prime Minister Lilo will share with academics at the Australian National University, where he once studied, to discuss the country’s economic management and some of the development issue which the country currently faces.

Mr. Lilo and his delegation will return Friday next week.

Further details of the trip will be released during a press conference at the Airport prior to the Prime Minister’s departure on Sunday.
