PRIME Minister Dr Derick Sikua and his foreign affairs Minister William Haomae on Saturday joined New Zealand High Commissioner His Excellency Mark Ramsden to celebrate the New Zealand day commonly known as the Waitangi day.
Various diplomatic mission representatives and New Zealanders joined in the ceremony.
Mr Ramsden during the ceremony highlighted many common activities between Solomon Islands and New Zealand that glued the two countries together and maintained the cordial relationship.
Foreign Affairs Minister William Haomae expressed appreciation for the many help received by Solomon Islands from New Zealand.
He said New Zealand has been a key player in the improvement of education in the country.
The impressive Haka normally performed by New Zealand Soldiers working with RAMSI was not performed but two soldiers stood up to sing the New Zealand National anthem.
Children from the Woodford International School were also there to sing the Solomon Islands national anthem with a melodious backup with instruments from the police brass band.
Waitangi Day commemorates a significant day in the history of New Zealand.
It is a public holiday held each year on 6 February in New Zealand to celebrate the signing of the treaty of Waitangi, New Zealand's founding document, on that date in 1840.
