RNZI: A 7.0 magnitude earthquake struck off the north coast of Papua New Guinea around 5pm local time.
The US Geological Survey reports that the quake struck at a depth of 202 kilometres and was centred 137 km north of Lae.
The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center said no destructive Pacific-wide tsunami was expected.
