RNZI: The Fiji civil society group the Citizens Constitutional Forum is hoping funding from Australia for Fiji’s promised elections in 2014 can give the Constitutional Commission independence from the interim government.
Australia has pledged more than 2 point 5 million US dollars to support Fiji’s Elections Office, the recently established Constitutional Commission and civic awareness programmes.
The chief executive of the CCF, Reverend Akuila Yabaki, says the funding is timely.
“This funding will help the constitutional commission to conduct its work in a way that they’re able to identify and employ or recruit their own personnel instead of waiting for people to be seconded by government because that would, in a way, compromise the position and independence which everybody wants to see.”
Reverend Yabaki says the United Nations should deliver the funding instead of the money going directly to the military regime.
