DEAR EDITOR – Thanks for allowing me a space to write in response to the subject quoted above on your Saturday’s paper issue No.4153 by the permanent secretary of the Ministry of Education Ms Kuve.
It has been noticed through the process of handling scholarship awards by certain officers that there are/have been corrupt practices taking form within the process, and to say lack of funding for scholarships as claimed by Ms Kuve is partially correct.
The whole story is here unfolded not from somebody or hear-passers but I myself being the eye witness.
Two years ago (2008) I noticed there were number of students (name) whom had already undergone scholarship training a year or two in Papua New Guinea and Fiji had also been seen boarding the flight bound for Cuba.
This has brought in question whether it is a failure to track down those students whom had already awarded scholarships or it is a deliberate pocketing or wantokism dealing.
Whatever it is those responsible should be further scrutinised of their handling of scholarships and their incompetence in tracking down such occurrence within the National Training Unit (NTU).
It was just a waste of money and time (opportunities).
While the permanent secretary of education in her latest press release of scholarships denied the opportunity of many students with high GPA of 3 and above because of insufficient funding; why certain students received double Scholarship Awards to study in FIJI/PNG or CUBA at that time under the same authority (SIG) when the duration of the on-going scholarships still unexpired?
This gluttonous action must have been a reflection of more available and sufficient funding for scholarship awards in the country.
Blemish to say it was a something of the past when more funding available which is not worth comparing with the lack of funding in the present, but in a human being normal conscience this action is corruptible and very expensive exercise which has direct inferences in the present that in fact denying scholarship opportunities of many potential students.
The deprived students of this nation need clarification from the Minister of Education and the Permanent secretary with the Foreign Affairs Ministry on this matter.
