About 160 candidates have been nominated to contest the 21 seats of the Guadalcanal Provincial (GP) Assembly election on 10th December.
At the close of nominations 4.30pm yesterday, Returning Officer, Charles Sisimia, confirmed that out of 198 forms being issued 160 nominations were received at the close of nomination.
Out of the 160 candidates, 150 are men and 10 women. The current MPA for Ward 14, Kolokarako, Hon Lazarus Rina is the only MPA who remains unopposed. This is the first case to be recorded here in Guadalcanal Province.
Mr Sisimia said that ward 2 of Saghalu in North West Guadalcanal was the highly contested ward with 14 candidates, followed by ward 19 Vulolo in Central Guadalcanal with 13 candidates.
“We are now screening all nominations now to verify all nominations are valid” he said. Once we are able to complete our verification checks we should be able to produce the provisional list of candidates for all 21 wards soon.
Mr Sisimia also added that three senior politicians of the provincial assembly have declined to seek re-election for another term. They are Hon. Stephen Panga, Hon. Silas Chekana and Hon. Walton Naezon.
