The Ministry of Infrastructure Development (MID) completed more than five kilometres of asphalt paving on Noro roads on February 25, 2025.
This marks a significant milestone in enhancing the transport infrastructure in Western Province.
The Noro Roads improvement is funded by the World Bank and implemented by the Solomon Islands Government through MID as part of the Second Solomon Islands Roads and Aviation Project (SIRAP2).
The upgrades aim to improve road safety, resilience against extreme weather conditions, and accessibility for residents and businesses.
The newly paved asphalt roads stretch from the Soltuna factory past the entrance of the Solomon Islands Ports Authority and to the market area, Baru road, and the main road to Munda.
The works have transformed what were once busy, damaged roads into modern, durable thoroughfares.

With the asphalt paving works now completed, the next phase of the work will focus on paving the other road sections with four kilometres of double bituminous surface treatment and a half kilometre of reinforced concrete pavement to further strengthen the durability and resilience of Noro Roads.
Noro Roads are essential connections between Noro International Port, customs, the tuna processing facility, and local markets with surrounding communities.
The upgraded roads are expected to boost business activity, enhance transport reliability, and create new investment opportunities.
“This upgrade demonstrates our commitment to enhancing infrastructure that benefits our community and promotes economic growth,” stated Allan Lilia, Permanent Secretary of MID. “These improvements will improve access to essential services and support key industries such as fisheries, tourism, and trade,” he added.
The Solomon Islands Government is dedicated to upgrading infrastructure across the country to enhance connectivity, promote development, and improve the quality of life for all citizens.
In addition to Noro Roads, SIRAP2 includes the construction of four new bridges in Malaita (Kolofe1, Kolofe2, Su’u Harbor, and Bira Bridges), upgrades to Honiara and Munda Airports, improvements at Santa Cruz (Lata) Airfield, investments in air navigation systems in Makira-Ulawa and Temotu Provinces, and support for regional airport maintenance.
