Police in Malaita Province arrested eight people on 19 May 2018 for alleged damage of properties, using abusive words and brewing of kwaso.
It is alleged that on Saturday 19 May 2018, six men in their 20’s and 30’s damaged a kitchen house and a kindergarten school building at Aenakafo, near Malu’u, North Malaita.
The men also allegedly used abusive words at police officers who attended the report.
The six men are facing one count each of wilful damage and using abusive words at police officers.
They have been released on bail to appear before the next court sitting on 24 July 2018 at Malu’u in North Malaita.
It is also alleged on Saturday 19 May 2018, two men in their 40’s, allegedly brewed kwaso at the Tiki area near the Aligegeo Provincial Secondary school.
The two men are facing one count each for brewing of liquor without authorization from the Minister responsible for issuing of a license and released on bail to appear before the Auki Magistrates Court on 30 May 2018.
Supervising Provincial Police Commander (PPC) Malaita Province, Superintendent Timothy Apaesi said, “It is sad to learn a kindergarten school building was attacked including a kitchen house. These properties provide service to our young children to acquire basic education and as well a place to prepare food for human consumption, which also cost money and effort to build. Such act must be condemned.”
He appealed to the good people of Malaita Province to respect school properties and other properties and to refrain from an unwanted behaviour.
He thanked the community leaders and local chiefs at Malu’u for assisting the police in the arrest of the men.
“During the arrest of the two men near the Aligegeo Provincial School, officers confiscated around 140 litres of kwaso which could fetch about $7,000.00 if sold in the local market,” said PPC Apaesi.
Superintendent Apaesi said, “People in Malaita must know that brewing of alcohol for sale without a license is illegal. Furthermore, brewing of kwaso for sale without a license is also illegal. There are other businesses that people can operate where they can obtain licenses from the Malaita Provincial Government to generate income rather than kwaso.”
