NINETY candidates have been nominated to contest the Honiara City Council’s 12 wards in next month’s elections.
This is after the closing of nominations on 19th November 2014.
The final list of candidates will be confirmed and made known after the closing of withdrawal on 3rd December, whilst polling day is on 17th December 2014.
Of those 12 wards, Vavaya recorded the highest nominated intending candidates with 15, Kola 12, Panatina 11, Ngossi 9, Mataniko and Cruz 8, Vuhokesa 6, Mbuburu and Vura 5, Kukum and Naha 4 with Rove/Lengakiki 3.
In a statement, city council election Returning Officer, Alphonsus Pero confirmed the validity of the 90 nominated candidates before a ballot paper draw was done to determine each candidate’s position on the ballot paper by the closing day of nominations.
Mr Pero said each candidate has until 3rd December to notify the returning officer in writing any decision of withdrawal of their candidacy.
List of the final nominated intending candidates are expected to be posted out in each of the respective 12 wards for public view by assisting returning officers soon.
Mr Pero said that the Honiara City Council election will be using the single ballot box voting system together with the same voters list that was used in the National General Election.
There is an amendment made to the Honiara City Council (Elections) Regulations 1999 that allows Council to adopt and use the process and procedures used in the national general elections.
