SOUTH Seas Evangelical Church (SSEC) will celebrate its 50th Golden jubilee anniversary at Ambu near Auki, Malaita, next week.
Up to 10,000 members of the church across the country are expected to converge for the week-long celebration.
month.
Pastor Stephen Ausuta, who is coordinating the event, said deputy prime minister Manasseh Maelanga will be their guest of honour.
That’s besides invited guest speakers who will share from the work of God during the event.
Pr Ausuta said the celebration is to mark when in 1964 the former South Seas Evangelical Mission (SSEM) was changed to SSEC.
SSEM was established in 1904 by Florence Young as a branch of the Queensland Kanaka Mission.
Between 1906 and 1920, SSEM established small enclaves on the coast of islands on Malaita; these enclaves were always under threat from the more powerful bush groups.
In 1964 the South Seas Evangelical Church was established its current name, and was stationed at Ambu.
It became independent from the mission in 1975.
