Solomon Islands young athletics long distance champion, Rosefelo Siosi has again scoop the prestigious Sportsman of the Year award.
Rosefelo won the same award last year.
The annual award is an initiative of the National Sports Council in recognition of best sports men and women in the country every year.
This is history for Rosefelo being the first athlete to have scooped the award two times in a row.
Rosefelo won two silver medals and one bronze in the 2013 Pacific Mini Games.
Adding to his string of successes, Rosefelo won the Fly Solomon Half marathon, Gizo half marathon and the Easter road race.
Speaking to Star Sports after receiving his award, Rosefelo said he is happy to have been named the Sportsman of the Year for the second time.
“It’s an honour to have received this award especially for the second time in a row.
“I would like to thank the people behind my success and not forgetting the almighty God for giving me the strength to continue doing my best.
“I will continue to fly the Solomon Islands flag in the upcoming regional and international sports events,” he said.
He added that despite not having proper training tracks, he has proven that any athlete can do the same if only they are committed in their trainings and what they aim for.
The Sports woman of the year award was awarded to the female long distance runner Sharon Firisua for athletics, Coach of the year for weightlifting’s coach Leslie Ata and the federation of year was also awarded to the weightlifting federation.
Alongside the top four awards was the presenting of awards for all athletes who won medals in the recent Pacific Mini Games.
A total of nine athletes received awards during the presentation, two from beach volleyball, two from Taekwondo, two from athletics and three from weightlifting.
Coaches of the four sports who won medals were also awarded with awards to show appreciation for their efforts.
