A TEAM from the Quarantine Department in the Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock is in Auki, Malaita, to check on recent discovery of the invasive African giant snail.
This was confirmed by a spokesperson from the department, on Wednesday.
The snails were discovered on the edge on the provincial capital, causing fear and alarm to residents.
“Our inspection team is now in Auki to check on the situation,” the spokesperson said.
“The plan here is to work closely with the Auki Agriculture office on an eradication programme for the province.
“We are waiting on the team on their return to see what their findings are and what action to take.”
Giant African snails were first brought into the country in 2000 by loggers who brought in their used machinery here.
