A fifty eight year old woman from Bokokimbo village in north east Guadalcanal has been the latest victim of a crocodile attack over the weekend.
The incident occurred early Saturday morning when the woman went to do her washing at the river when she got attacked.
It was believed the 4.6 meter crocodile drowned and killed woman.
Henry Saea a villager said it was a terrible death as this latest incident is the sixth to have happened at the community of Bokokimbo.
“The woman went down to the river around 6am to do her washing when the crocodile attacked her. When she was discovered missing villagers began to search for her. However foot prints of the crocodile signals the woman must have been eaten by a crocodile,” Saea said.
Saea added the community then alerted Tetere police and with the assistance of RAMSI personnel they hunted the crocodile.
“Three hours later we found the body of the deceased with a missing arm, leg and internal organs which we believed must have already been eaten by the crocodile. And that was further confirmed when the crocodile was spotted and shot by the RAMSI officers with their gun,” Saea added.
He said villagers operated the crocodile’s body and found the deceased’s missing arm and leg inside the crocodile’s stomach which confirmed she was killed by the crocodile.
It was revealed the woman was the sixth victim of such attack in that area.
Amongst the victims are four males and two females of which include the old woman and her daughter who was killed in 2009.
Meanwhile Bokokimbo community elders have called on their leaders to assist them to find alternative water sources seeing that their river is becoming a danger zone which they don’t want to risk their lives for the crocodiles.
“The lives of our people living around the Bokokimbo river is at great risk and our community calls on our provincial and national leaders, NGOs and other stakeholders who can assist our community to find alternative water sources like water tanks and or provide water supply to our community,” Mr Saea said.
Meanwhile the community thanked police officers and RAMSI for their assistance.
