Dika Toua’s Silver medal performance has earned her K50, 000 (US$20, 499) as the Government’s incentive for team PNG to the Commonwealth Games.
Papua New Guineans around the globe are still heaping praise on the veteran weightlifter from Hanuabada village in Port Moresby.
Dika snatched Silver medal in the women’s 53kg, lifting 82kg in the snatch and 111kg in the clean and jerk at the 2014 Glasgow Commonwealth Games.
Athletes who win Gold get K100, 000 (US$40,999) and Bronze K25, 000 (US$10,499).
Sports Minister Justin Tkatchenko earlier challenged the athletes to bring home medals.
Meanwhile, BSP brand ambassador Toea Wisil will advance to the semi finals of the women’s 100m track event in the XX Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, Scotland.
On Sunday, the PNG champion came third in her heat with a time of 11.64s behind Australian Melissa Breen (11.54) and Northern Ireland’s Amy Foster (11.62). Adrine Monagi and Helen Philemon, who also ran the 100m heats, did not qualify.
Monagi stopped the clock at 12.83 and Philemon 13.12.
In the women’s 400m, Betty Burua, Shirley Vunatup and Donna Koniel did their best but did not get into the top three places in their heats, hence cannot advance into the second round. Burua clocked a season’s best time of 55.48s, while Vunatup came home in 1.00.10 and Koniel 58.40.
The male sprinters of Kupun Wisil and Ruwan Gunasinghe who participated in the men’s 100m did not qualify for the second round, clocking 10.86s and 11.03 respectively.
