PORT MORESBY – The PNG Games Organising Committee (GOC) which is responsible for the delivery of the 2015 Pacific Games to be held in Port Moresby is very confident that the event will be delivered as planned.
Speaking to the sponsors of the 2015 Games early this month, GOC chief executive officer Peter Stewart highlighted the magnitude of the Games and how critical it would be for the successful delivery and the supply of essential goods and services.
“We are very confident that the Games will be delivered as planned because of the number of critical and very important things we have achieved and committed for next year,” he said.
Some of GOC’s key achievements last year have been the appointment of Makoda who will be producing the opening and closing ceremonies.
Eurest (PNG) Catering & Services Ltd to look after the 3000-plus athletes, who will be fed on a daily basis with more than 20,000 meals served at the Games Village.
The committee has engaged a locally based company, Lae Ever Clean to provide cleaning services for the Games Village. GOC has awarded 50 contracts to various goods and services providers this year. These contracts are worth K100 million.
“This is a critical part of the preparations, so partnering with competent and experienced goods and services providers, will enable GOC to deliver the Games successfully,’’ Mr Stewart said.
GOC has engaged eight broadcasters for the Games. Three of these broadcasters are EMTV, Click TV and Kundu 2, who are PNG based.
Apart from the Games, GOC would like to use this opportunity to show the world that PNG is not only a great place for sports but also an incredible tourist destination.
This is with the aim of portraying a positive image of the country to the rest of the world. The medical team is an essential part of the Games and the GOC has already recruited medical volunteers.
Opposition Leader Don Polye came out in yesterday’s media conference saying he is in doubt of PNG’s preparation for the regional event.
He said the government has no money to pay contractors to complete work on the facilities and therefore the infrastructures will not be available on time for the Games which begins in July.
