FIJI TIMES – International Olympic Committee (IOC) president Thomas Bach will be present in Fiji during the Oceania National Olympic Committee (ONOC) general assembly in May.
Bach will be in Suva to hear the views of the ONOC and National Olympic Committees of the Oceania region.
The build-up to the general assembly starts with the regional media conference which starts on April 26. Bach arrives in Fiji on April 30.
ONOC president Dr Robin Mitchell said many issues including the effect of Cyclone Pam on Vanuatu and sports will be discussed.
“The first batch of the meetings begins Saturday week with the Oceania Athletes Commission. We have basically 40 athletes from the region who will be giving their views on how they should be assisted and supported in their build up to the Pacific Games and Rio,” Dr Mitchell said.
“The media conference starts Monday will run until the end of the assembly. This conference is to provide media especially those covering the Pacific Games. Some of the things we will talk about is the regional Olympic forum, administrators for Rio.
“Last night we had the confirmation from the IOC, the president is coming. Accompanying the president are the senior executives from the IOC, the director-general and the deputy director-general.
“This will be director-general Christophe De Keppers first visit to the Oceania region.”
The conference for the media aims to help journalist better cover events such as the Pacific Games and the Olympic Games.
To top this off, the regional athletes would get a chance to be part of the ONOC general assembly where countries would share their challenges and development goals achieved in par with the standard set by the IOC.
The assembly officially starts on 26 April 2015.
