Minister for Agriculture and Livestock (MAL) Augustine Auga has reiterated the importance of research as a key to improving agricultural productivity in the country.
Mr Auga highlighted this in parliament recently when he contributed his ministry’s support towards the motion of sine die.
He told the house that research is fundamental to development of plans and strategies to boost agricultural activities within the sector.
He stated that lack of research would only breed uncertainty and lack of ambitions to pursue and project improvements and future prosperity of the sector.
“Lack of research support facilities is a major concern that has to be addressed if the sector is to progress or even experience developing innovations that are essential for economic growth,” he said.
He added, his ministry is seriously taking the issue of under equipped for research purposes by establishing mini-laboratories to cater for pest and disease diagnostics, and biotechnology.
“This is the first step towards establishing agriculture research laboratories to support the sector,” the Minister stated.
