In a nation state, a ‘Functional Society’ has to build symmetrical relationships of cooperation between ‘change agents’. In this regard, in every aspect different organs in the society are equal players, and so the need to break with the relationships of subordination.
This will ensure we preserve a stable and harmonious environment for the betterment of our people.
However, this is not the case in Solomon Islands where pertinent issues of national concerns are either suppressed or brushed aside at the expense of the mass population.
The decision by the government to stand alone with its unpopular choices is a very dangerous undertaking. For instance the detested PEC tax free entitlements awarded to our Members of Parliament is a ‘thorn in the flesh’ for the tax payers in Solomon Islands.Despite the justification by the Prime Minister and Minister of Finance, it is a soup hard to swallow.
Now, what supposed to be a harmonious society manifest the opposite, as the ongoing critical views expressed byinterest groups is posing a potential threat to the social fabrics of our society.
As such, the faith placed on the government is declining, the trust is diminishing and the hope is fading.
Given the situation, shall the government continue to give a deaf ear to the people, expressed through the diverse organs that form this society? I don’t think so. Apparently, continuous pursuance of any unpopular decision made by the government will be dead precarious.
The least we can expectis to have ‘disgruntled people’ or construct a society prone to social disharmony, let alone, creating a gap where groups with relative power to rise and enforce their wills on our impoverished nation. In such event, when a particular group has enough power, it will change the society to suit its own needs, and guess what, we will all be drowned in hot water.
Lest we forget, the nation is talking through print media, social media and other mediums expressing their disappointments. Simultaneously, established institutions, independent corruption watch groups, and unions are screaming in agony. Now, can the government step up and do something about it, or simply ignore and expect a mass revolt?
Despite being different organs in our given society, I presume all must work together to preserve our nation and foremost to ensure the fundamental organism (government) is maintain at all cost for our societal harmony. Any more persistent ignorance will reap our nation apart.
The wise thing to do is LISTEN!! DCC government must lend their ears and take appropriate action.
Hence the advise is this; do not undermine the power of the people – it is akin a sleeping giant, when the monster is awoken, will all be running for our lives.
After all, Solomon Islands must take all possible measures to remain a functional society; a society working with and for the best of its people, and in harmony with her stakeholders to address its paramount needs and collective aspirations.
