Dear Editor – I am very pleased to learn that the Food and Agricultural Organization (FAO) of the United Nations has signed an agreement with the Solomon Islands Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock to aid sustainable agriculture and rural development.
With the establishment of a country office the FAO will be better placed to give technical support to local policy makers and advise on best practices for food production.
The joint agreement could not have come at a better time when the DCC Government is set on meeting the needs and expectations of the rural majority and at a time when I have been trying to identify natural resources that could provide food security, including virgin coconut oil, bananas, cocoa, honey, palm oil, fresh water fish and seaweed production.
