THE NATIONAL – The Jackson International Airport terminal will be ready for international events including the Pacific Games in July, an official says.
National Airports Corporation acting managing director Joseph Tupiri told The National that the international terminal should be ready this month and opened in June.
The K100 million project undertaken by Matrix Construction Limited will have world class facilities, including duty-free and coffee shops, and retail facilities.
“It will completely transform travelling experience for our travellers. The National Airport Corporation is ready for the 2015 (Pacific) Games ahead of everybody else,” Tupiri said.
A K70 million credit facility was obtained from ANZ Bank and capital funding of K30 million from the Government for the upgrading work.
“We are determined to bring our airports to an international standard.
“Whatever little resource we earn from our revenue is being used and when situations arise where we need to continue the work, we go and get a credit facility from the bank,” he said.
Tupiri said the State entity was re-developing airports in Mt Hagen, Hoskins, Vanimo and Goroka.
Nadzab airport in Lae will be redeveloped with the assistance of the Japanese International Co-operation Agency.
Tupiri has been acting as managing director for NAC for 19 months.
