Dear Editor – This is the Red Cross appeal week in the Solomon Islands, running from 12 to 15 May, an event regularly held in order to raise funds to support the shortfall in the organization’s finances due to cut backs in donor funds by national and external agencies.
It is worth recalling the Red Cross is an international humanitarian movement with 97 million volunteers, members and staff worldwide.
The movement was founded to protect life and health, to respect for all human beings, and to prevent and alleviate human suffering.
The Red Cross, with its base in Honiara, has done exceptional work over the years and provided much needed aid and humanitarian assistance to the victims and families that suffered so much during the 2014 flash floods.
In a more recent case, the Red Cross gave practical assistance to the family that tragically lost their two children in a house fire.
Please help the Red Cross to continue to do their selfless work in aid of the needy throughout the country by donating generously to this week’s appeal.
The Red Cross volunteers who will be seeking donations during this appeal period will be wearing reflective vests bearing the logo of the Red Cross Society. Each volunteer will also carry a card showing their name and the card will display the Red Cross logo.
