NEWLY re-planted palm oil at the Guadalcanal Plains Palm Oil Limited (GPPOL) in North Guadalcanal area are being reportedly dying due to lack of rain.
The current dry season being experienced in parts of the country including Honiara for nearly a month now has affected the plants.
A GPPOL resident told the Solomon Star this week that the newly replanted palms are struggling to cope with the dry weather due to lack of rain.
The replanting idea started early this year to replace the old ones, it was highlighted.
The man added, that If the current fine and dry weather condition continues for some more weeks, it would affect the newly planted palm oil trees and even root crops and vegetables.
“At the moment, crops have started dying as well and we are confused about the weather partner.”
A spokesman from the weather office said, its the effect of El Nino condition.
“Currently we are experiencing the effects of El Nino which would result in below rainfall condition.”
The officer said, the situation would continue towards the end of the year.
