Dear Editor – As the most affected constituency of Choiseul province, I’ve seen that the $100,000 allocation fund for disaster is unfair.
South Choiseul constituency was badly affected by the cyclone last two months ago that caused damage to residential houses, clinics, food gardens, plantations and water supplies.
So the $100,000 allocated was simply not enough.
The damage is caused by strong wind, big waves, flooding river and landslide, leaving community and people in a condition not suitable for them.
Area like Wagina ward (1) and Vasiduki ward (2) were badly affected with big waves, strong wind and flooding rivers, which resulted in serious damages to homes, properties, and infrastructures.
Therefore, by looking to the amount allocated for disaster it is too far small.
For example, if I plan to repair or relocate Wagina clinic, I believe this fund would be used up on Wagina clinic alone, living others with no assistance.
If that is so, how could we help other places and community who have lost their houses, food garden, plantation and water supply etc…with this limited amount of funding?
Another point of unfairness is some constituencies were not affected by the last cyclone and also no damage evidences can be seen, but yet they too, were allocated with the same amount. And also were served first with the fund. This is not fair for the south Choiseul constituency.
Therefore, I called on the responsible authority to look carefully into this issue.
