HONIARA City Council has proposed to hold the election of the mayor on 16th August.
This came after the former mayor, Alfrence Fatai has stepped down on 2nd August to allow his administration to continue with their plans and programmes.
According to the HCC Act and Standing Orders, his deputy, Eddie Ngava will perform the duties until such time the Minister of Home Affairs and Deputy Prime Minister, Manasseh Maelanga announces the date for the election of new city mayor.
A insider source confirmed the clerk office is just waiting for Maelanga to arrive from Brazil to gazette the instrument of the proposed date.
Maelanga is currently attending the Sports Ministerial meeting at the Olympic Games in Rio, Brazil.
There are currently 11 councillors after the other councillor had passed away this year.
Under the HCC Act, Guadalcanal new premier, Anthony Veke, three Members of Parliament for Honiara name Douglas Ete (East Honiara), John Moffat Fugui (Central Honiara) and Namson Tran (West Honiara) plus four members appointed will vote in the election.
However, the 11 councillors are eligible to contest the mayor’s post.
Fatai was elected in December 2014.
However, his public image came into disrepute after he was fined $2000 for driving without a driver’s license, driving when under influence of liquor and consuming liquor in a moving vehicle.
He is also awaiting his sentence for attempted bribery on 16th August, which he pleaded guilty to.
