St Nicholas retain U20 trophy
SAINT Nicholas U20 netball team has once again proved their supremacy in the Honiara Netball Association (HNA) U20 league.
This came after they defended their title as champions in this year’s U20 league after edging Tenaru 18-11 in a stunning grand final play off last Friday at the Lawson Tama netball court.
St Nicholas girls proved to be the best team for utilising their scoring chances in all four quarters of the final showdown.
Tenaru on the other hand displayed superb performance but fail to utilize their scoring opportunities.
If their goal shooter and goal attacker utilized their many chances the result of the grand final could have been different.
However, St Nicholas were full of confidence when they entered the court for the grand final match.
They took it from the start by leading Tenaruwith a 6-2 score in the first quarter followed by 5-2 in the second andthen 4-1 in the third quarter.
Tenaru came back strong in the final quarter by bagging 6 goals to 3 but could not dethrone the defending champions.
Saint Nicholas head coach Mary Maesilia told Star Sports after the grand final that their victory was another milestone achievement for the school and her girls.
“Our win today is another milestone achievement for us,’’ she said.
Maesilia said she was so proud of her girls for being the champions of the U20 for two consecutive terms.
She also stressed that her girls’ performance this year was really outstanding compared to their 2015 performance.
Meanwhile, Selwyn College won the bronze medal of the competition.
For consolation awards, Lilian of Saint Nicholas walked away with the best attacker award, Amanda of Selwyn College won the best centre award, best defender went to Carisha of Tenaru, golden hand was won by Jaybie of Selwyn College, the player of the final was awarded TO Margaret of Saint Nicholas while Panatina school scooped the most improve team.
