A second tsunami warning was issued late last night after another powerful earthquake with a magnitude of 7.4 struck at 11.35pm, located near 111 km South of Kirakira, at a depth of 20 kilometres.
Downgraded from a previously reported strength of 7.7, the quake prompted hundreds to flee their homes.
Residents in Makira province where the quake was severely felt reportedly fled to the hills.
Students of two boarding schools, St Stephens Pamua and Waimapuru secondary school were evacuated to higher grounds shortly after midnight, where students were reported to be in shock and fear as they headed to the hills in darkness.
The tsunami warning was cancelled two hours later at 2.30am, early this morning.
