THOUSANDS of Honiara residents have been walking to work and do their daily business as work on the Mataniko Bridge in Central Hospital continues.
They have also been walking home after work because they have discovered that they arrive at their destinations faster than commuting on public buses.
Many walkers spoken to by our reporter said walking to work and back home is very healthy and people should be encouraged to continue to do so even after the Honiara roads have been repaired.
Meanwhile, although police continue to control traffic movement on the bridge, drivers were allowed to start using both lanes.
And police officers are encouraging people to use the overhead crossing at Number 9 to cross the piece of road near the eastern end of the Mataniko Bridge.
Pedestrians spoken to by our reporter said they refused to use the overhead crossing because human excrete was everywhere.
