MALAITA provincial police commander (PPC), Alfred Uiga has denied any knowledge of an alleged road block at Kwaibala Bridge by self-claimed provincial road contractors who demanded vehicles to pay-up their fees for mending the roads before being allowed to pass through.
Speaking to this paper yesterday, PPC Uiga said that the police was not aware of any reports of unlawful road blocking and also demanding of substantial amounts in the name of road maintenance.
This came about following reports that a group of men who claimed to have been contracted by the provincial government to mend the Kwaibala feeder road and also charging vehicles $100-$150 cash before allowed to use the bridge and road.
“We do not have any reports or complaints of such unlawful road blockages at anytime yesterday (Monday) or even today (yesterday).
“Those that involve in such are unlawfully doing so and should anyone hear of such, they should notify police immediately,” Mr Uiga said.
He added that despite not receiving any reports on the matter from the public, police will patrol the area and stop such from occurring.
Mr Uiga was not available for comments when contacted late yesterday for more updates on the matter.
