A visiting Guadalcanal villager, Professor Rughu Poli has expressed surprise the Solomon Islands capital city of Honiara does not have public toilets.
He said before the country gained its independence from Britain 36 years ago, Honiara did have public toilets.
Mr Poli said it appears people use the beach or bush, but that practice is unhygienic.
He said there is public toilet at the Honiara Central Market, but even animals would not use it because it is filthy with human waste all over the walls.
Providing public amenities like toilets is the responsibility of the Honiara City Council.
Mr Poli also criticizes the Honiara City Council (HCC) for its continuing failure to keep the city clean.
