SOLOMON Islands has the potential to become a better self-reliant, healthy country with more and more students acquiring tertiary education overseas.
This was the vision of Minister of Education and Human Resource Development (MEHRD), Dick Ha’amori, which he stressed at the graduation of 22medical students in Cuba recently.
In a statement, Mr Ha’amori was quoted as saying he has a vision to see Solomon Islands being a self-reliant country with a strong healthy, productive and vibrant population.
He reiterated that with many more students heading overseas for further studies, the country is rich with human resources, which can help push through development.
Thus, Mr Ha’amori said that through education and good academic performances as displayed over the years by many students, Solomon Islands can become a more self-reliant nation.
He also acknowledged the fact that more and more women have taken on careers that were once only given to men.
He said that it is pleasing to see many women taking up medicine as their life time career, building up the human resource of medical professionals (doctors) in the country to greater heights.
Seven of the students that graduated were females, with more expected to graduate next year.
Whilst conceding that the country still has a lot of work in tackling gender balance and equality, Mr Ha’amori however added that the country is heading on the right path.
