The United Democratic Party for Social Reform and Economic Advancement (UDP) yesterday paid a courtesy call on the newly elected Paramount Chief of Burns Creek, Chief Peter Usi to congratulate and show support for his leadership.
In a statement from the party, spokesperson Baranabas Henson said UDP recognizes the importance of working together with chiefs and communities throughout the nation through a comprehensive fundamental social reform platform that prioritizes people and communities.
Mr Henson said the Party views this as the only way forward for Solomon Islands to progress economically whilst at the same time achieve sustainable national unity, social cohesion, and stability.
“As a new political party, UDP believes that the constitution which established our nation has given far-reaching powers of the highest order to the state to the extent that the needs and aspirations of state institutions are prioritized over those of the people.
“We hope to advance this belief through our party platform to enhance the realization of the most feasible and pragmatic people-state relationship as key to national growth and development.”
Paramount Chief Usi welcomed and thanked the Party for the warm gesture of friendship.
UDP and Chief Usi made a commitment to work closely to find solutions to problems faced by the Burns Creek community.
Chief Usi further called on the Party to seriously consider the need for national reconciliation in its policy objectives as a crucial step towards achieving peace and stability in Solomon Islands.
He further emphasized the importance of addressing youth unemployment in his community.
He called on community leaders and families throughout the nation to work with the government in recognizing youth and youth skills as a means of addressing unproductively, lawlessness and crime.
A congratulatory token of a tafuliae (traditional shell money) and two thousand dollars was presented to Paramount Chief Usi in a small ceremony, to assist in his work in the Burns Creek community.
