POLICE on Thursday arrested and charged outgoing MP for Central Guadalcanal Peter Shanel with common assault.
This was in relation to an attack on a constituent who reportedly came to seek financial assistance from Mr Shanel.
Officers at the Central Police Station questioned and later released Mr Shanel on bail after charging him.
It was not clear yesterday when the incident that led to the assault occurred.
But senior police officers spoken to said some members of Mr Shanel’s family joined in the attack.
Police say Mr Shanel’s son-in-law was also facing a common assault charge.
Mr Shanel could not be reached for comments yesterday.
Mr Shanel previously faced similar charge from which he was jailed and consequently lost the Central Guadalcanal seat during the 8th parliament.
He regained the seat in the last election.
Mr Shanel will appear in court on November 10.
