A TOTAL of 750 people both young and old in the Malaita Outer Islands (MOI) have taken their vaccination against measles over the weekend.
This happened after a health team from Kilu’ufi Hospital consisting of nine members traveled to Luaniua, Avaha and Pelau islands as part of the national measles campaign to immunise people against the measles outbreak.
The targeted age group included ages between 6 months old to 30 years-old.
The team reached Luaniua late Saturday afternoon and kicked off the vaccination program.
They were divided into two teams on Luaniua where only six remains on the Island (Luaniua) while the other three members left on the same afternoon onboard an outboard motor to Pelau and Avaha.
The team spent two days to conduct the vaccination program.
During the visit the nurses were able to visit the sick people at their respective homes and give them treatment and also conduct anti-natal check to mothers.
Since the outbreak Malaita provincial health team had been very busy visiting communities to conduct vaccination.
A similar team also visited Sikaiana last month as part of the measles campaign.
Meanwhile, the communities were excited to receive the health team and thanked the Malaita provincial health authority for the initiative.
The team was led my Nelson Fifanty assistant director of nursing committee and Ben Lagonilamo community nurse consultant for Malaita province, central region.
Fifanty thanked World Health Organization and Malaita provincial health authority for support towards the visit and also IDC shipping services for the transport.
The health team returned to Auki on Tuesday.
