A Taiwan medical and dental mobile team recently visited the Renbel and Western province.
The visiting medical team was sent by the government of Republic of China (Taiwan) with the support of the Ministry of Health.
During the visits the team has provided medical services to the rural people in the two provinces for two weeks in September.
The team comprised of a senior dermatologist Dr. Chin, Yi-Ying, one neurological surgeon Dr. Wang,Tse-Lun, one senior dentist, Fu,Wan-Ru and three professional nurses, Su, Yu-Jen; Lin, Yu-Chau and Tung, Hao-Mei, who are from Kaohsiung Medical University Hospital (KMUH) and Kaohsiung Municipal Hsiao-Kang Hospital in Taiwan. A local dentist Mishella Moveni also joined the team.
The mobile medical team provided medical and dental services at Tegano clinic, West Rennell mini hospital.
According to the director of nursing in Rennell mini hospital, since there is no medical officers stationed in West Rennell the residents really appreciate the medical consultation and dental treatment from Taiwanese team.
The team next visited Koroivuku, Ghete, Tetemere as well as Seghe mini hospital to serve patients in Western province.
In all, more than one thousand patients received medical and dental treatments.
During this period, the dermatologist Dr Chin found that skin diseases such as tinea infection as well-known as Bakua are very common.
These are usually induced by humidity weather and bad sanitation habits; the infection could be reduced by changing dry, clean clothes and maintaining the hygiene of body.
In addition, Dentist Fu found that there were high prevalence rate of dental caries in the pubic.
Most patients ignore the vitality of oral hygiene and the importance of regular and correct teeth brushing. The perception of keeping good oral hygiene habits should be delivered to every individual.
The R.O.C (Taiwan) Ambassador to Solomon Islands, H.E. Victor Yu said this is the second Taiwan mobile medical team to Solomon Islands in 2014, the team mainly went to rural areas to serve the people who could not receive proper medical care. Taiwan would like to contribute more to assist those who are in need of help.
