Malaita Provincial Police Commander (PPC) Alfred Uiga has acknowledged the support rendered by Honiara based Police officers during last week’s national general election.
Prior to the election a number of Honiara based Police Response Team (PRT) officers, normal duty Police personnel and Participating Police Force (PPF) were deployed to Malaita Province to help provide security during polling day.
On Monday after the completion of counting members of the Honiara based Police team have started returning to Honiara.
Commander Uiga on Monday saluted the officers for their help.
“I’ am really impressed with the work carried out by these officers.”
He said the officers were prompt and active during the election period which sees less violence happening.
“They provided tight security at the polls and ensured the ballot boxes are transported safely.”
As a token of appreciation Auki Police had hosted a small farewell function for the officers.
A total of six (6) PRT officers, four (4) fire servicemen and more than 60 ordinary officers were deployed to Malaita fortnight ago.
“Their presence helped solved the problem of shortage in officers for Malaita. They were stationed in areas throughout the province in the days leading up to poll.”
Most of the officers are now back in Honiara.
They will further play a role in maintain law and order during the period leading up the formation of a new Government and the election of a new Prime Minister.
