POLICE Commissioner, Frank Prendergast has called on the general public to place their confidence in the Royal Solomon Islands Police Force (RSIPF) as they continue to hunt down those involved in the Mbike Island shooting incident on Tuesday morning.
Mr Prendergast said that it is important that the public do not panic about the involvement of firearms (guns) used in the matter, adding that the RSIPF and the Participating Police Force (PPF) are capable of managing the situation.
This came about following a fast craft carrying several Members of Parliament to Mbike Island in Ngella on Monday night, was damaged by a group of unidentified men who were alleged to have used guns and petrol bombs.
Whilst confirming that guns were used in the incident, Mr Prendergast called for calm, adding that a joint task force comprising of the RSIPF and the PPF are making the matter their top priority.
This has however done little to improve the lack of trust and confidence that people have in the RSIPF having not yet been rearmed.
“We need to rearm the RSIPF, as there are still guns out there with the latest Mbike Island incident,” were the general observation of the public in relation to the matter.
This has also sparked concerns from the general public, calling on the newly elected Prime Minister, Manasseh Sogavare and his government to look into the matter and consider re-arming the Police Force.
