Malaitan Jonah Myles says the incoming provincial government should remove all political appointees engaged by the last government.
His comments came as the province prepares to elect its new premier this week.
Myles said the province needs a new breed of leaders and public servants.
“We need to get rid of the old breed from the last government and put in new people there,” he said.
“The engagement of political appointees by the last government has resulted in the province now down on its knees because of lack of finances.
“What more we want to see?
“Do we need to see this province drowned or lay on its own belly before we take action?
“The province needs to undergo major surgeries in its systems if it is to recover from its current financial woes,” Myles said.
He claimed the last government was paying its political appointees at level 11 to 12 salaries.
“This is unbelievable because at the provincial level, highest paid public servants are paid only at level 8.
“The question is where did the last government get the money to pay these appointees such huge salaries?
“No wonder the province was living from hand to mouth during the last government.”
Myles said the incoming government will have to take some serious steps to clean up the mess left behind by the last government.
