Transparency Solomon Islands has presented its policy position and suggestions for the proposed Independent Commission Against Corruption (ICAC) to the Policy Formulation Team at the Prime Minister’s Office, yesterday afternoon.
TSI made the presentation to assist the government in its planning to establish the ICAC and to present their position on the importance of having an ICAC and why it matters to Solomon Islands.
The presentation was attended by the Chair of the Government Policy Formulation Team, Special Secretary to Prime Minister, Rence Sore and member of the policy team.
During the presentation, Tony Hughes, a Board Member of TSI highlighted that combating corruption is not an easy task and is very challenging in both the global and local context.
“There are many forms of corruption ranging in size and nature.
“Although the extent of corruption has been widely observed and publicly discussed, the effort to effectively address it by our anti-corruption government agencies has had no significant impact.
“We need an effective ICAC that can investigate and prosecute offenders” Mr Hughes said.
TSI Executive Officer Daniel Fenua added that TSI is looking forward to support the government in formulating the ICAC.
TSI has access to global experience in combating corruption through links it has with other countries that have functioning ICACs.
The SSPM and Chair of the Government Policy Formulation Team Rence Sore thanked TSI for its contribution and said that the government team will work together with TSI to effectively address corruption in Solomon Islands.
