MALAITA Outer Islands (MOI) people fear they will be hit by another severe food shortage.
Resident Wilson Sangahu said heavy downpour in recent weeks has affected their food gardens.
“Our food gardens were swamped and soon fruit and root crops will rot,” Mr Sangahu said.
He said people of the MOI always experience severe food shortages when sea water inundated their food gardens.
“Now, it happened again and in coming weeks and months, people will experience another disaster.”
He said the islanders would be served with justice if the National Disaster officers visit to ascertain the claims so that assistance can be rendered.
“It does not have to be during severe cyclones or floods that support should be rendered, but our situation is different and should also be categorised under the disaster folder.”
He said people are coping because of the current lifting of the ban on beche-de-mer which he said really help people earn money.
“But the ban is only lifted for three months. Once that is over, we will be in big trouble. This was why we always asked our leaders to open their eyes and see our real problems.”
