THE Honiara Central Market Management and Honiara City Council (HCC) executive has decided to close the main market on Sundays due to less vendors and customers.
Honiara Central Market Master, Saxon Ofata revealed this to Solomon Star in an interview yesterday.
This follows concerns raised in the media why the new market management has closed down Sunday market.
Sunday Market was an initiative of former Market Mistress Matha Houriapu in 2012.
The idea was aimed to give working mothers an opportunity to sell their products and foods during their Sunday day-off.
However Mr Ofata explained; “There are two reasons why we closed down the Sunday market this is because of less revenue collected by council, less vendors visiting the market and more workers doing overtime.
“These are simple reasons why the market management and executive closed down the Sunday market,” Mr Ofata explained.
He added that other reason is for the market association to conduct a general clean-up.
“Since we closed down the Sunday market, we have now engaged the market association to do clean-ups and little maintenance work in the market each Sundays.
“This to maintain market cleanliness so that vendors and visitors can enjoy the market facilities while doing their shopping there,” Mr Ofatasaid.
Meanwhile Mr Ofata thanked the market association involuntarily helping the market management to clean market vicinity each Sunday.
