AXIOM Mining Limited has offered opportunity for six science and engineering university students to workwith experienced geologists in Isabel province, exploring what could well be one of the Pacific’s largest nickel deposits.
A statement from mining company on Tuesday said, the students spend more than a month on the island.
Five of the students are being sponsored by the Department of Education and Human Resource Development and one is studying at University of Queensland in Australia.
All six are gaining invaluable hands-on experience at Axiom KB’s Isabel Nickel Project on Kolosori land, it was revealed.
Axiom’s senior geologist Carlos Maelaua said, “Axiom is here for the long term so we want to be part of training the next generation of professionals. It’s great to work with these bright young people and thanks to the Solomon Islands Government for the opportunity.”
The students got the opportunity to participate in exploration activities including observations of drilling, core logging, surveying, computer data entry and learned about soil structure arrangements, environmental and mining planning, and safety management.
